The Beat the Streets
wrestling organization began
its 2007/2008 season off with a history-making turnout when
it hosted its inaugural
Champions Wrestling Clinic at Grand Street Campus on
Saturday, December 1.
The clinic attracted a
record-making 200 people consisting of wrestlers, parents,
and New York City coaches from both Beat the Streets and the
PSAL. Over 25 coaches and 140 wrestlers drilled, trained,
and learned motivational chants in a fun-filled five hour
training session that concluded with live scrimmage
wrestling.
The clinic centered around
basic skills and Soviet Olympic wrestling techniques. The
main clinician was Nick Catana, ex-Romanian national team
member and Greco-Roman coach for the prestigious New York
Athletic Club.
Leading the clinic was new
executive director of Beat the Streets Mike Cigala, who has
transformed the educational aspect of BTS overnight to a
first class entity. Cigala, a DOE highly decorated educator
and successful coach, has founded the Beat the Streets
Coaches College Program to change the culture of success
within NYC wrestling.
The Beat the Streets Program
will kick-off its Winter Program with 20 new teams being
added to the Middle School Program Dec. 5. In 2008 the BTS
will begin its first encounter into Middle School League
Competition with 30 teams in the newly created FORTRESS
LEAGUE.
