NHSCA CHARACTER AND LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS TO APPEAR ON FOX AND FRIENDS MORNING NEWS SHOW THIS SATURDAY Fox and Friends will feature the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Character and Leadership Workshops that are presently being conducted in high schools throughout the state of Pennsylvania. The C & L Workshops will involve 640 Pennsylvania high schools and almost 8,000 coaches, athletes, and parents. Lt. Col. Mike Curran, ARNG, Easton High School wrestler Colin Dailey, and NHSCA Executive Director Bob Ferraro will appear on the show. The show will be aired live between 7AM – 10AM on Saturday, November 11. Fox and Friends is the most watched morning news show in America. The NHSCA added Character and Leadership Workshops to its popular line of coaching and professional development programs. These are a school-based program designed to assist school administrators in developing character and leadership skills among students, coaches, and parents. Developed by the NHSCA and sponsored by the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, the Character and Leadership Workshops is the NHSCA’s newest – and potentially most far-reaching – professional development program, one that will benefit not only coaches, but athletes and their parents as well. The Character and Leadership Workshops, a grass-roots program limited to 10 schools per workshop, is designed not only to develop the necessary skills for leaders and role models, but also to help reduce the occurrence of behaviors that result in suspensions and other disciplinary action. “The NHSCA developed the Character and Leadership Program in response to a need that was expressed to us frequently by school administrators across the nation,” NHSCA Executive Director Bob Ferraro said. “Administrators are concerned about the lack of character and leadership they see in many of their students. Character and leadership are very important to any student in any school activity.” The NHSCA reached out to the Pennsylvania Army National Guard for the leadership portion of the Workshop because as “America’s hometown team” they are the local community’s best source of leadership expertise. “We are proud to sponsor the NHSCA Character and Leadership Workshops,” said Lt. Col. Mike Curran of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. “Character, leadership and education perfectly fit the Army National Guard profile.” The Character and Leadership Workshops are five hours in length, with 10 schools participating in each workshop. Workshops will be provided complimentary to each school. A total of 120 athletes, coaches, and parents will participate in each workshop. Meetings conducted during the workshops will focus on demonstrating positive behaviors, such as teamwork and loyalty that encourage the development and the display of character and leadership. A “character coach” will be selected at each school and will continue to serve as an information resource at his or her school. The goal of the program is to offer the Workshops to every high school in America. Workshops have begun this fall and will be hosted by 64 Pennsylvania high schools that will include 640 schools as well as 7680 participants.
The NHSCA offers more resources for professional coaching development than any other organization in the country, and the Character and Leadership Workshops are the latest addition to that list. Other NHSCA programs include: Coaching certification programs in 20 scholastic sports, Bachelor, masters, and doctorate degree in coaching through a partnership with United States Sports Academy, Professional Development – a structured approach to develop competencies for coaches and administrators, and Character and Leadership certification programs.
