Grand Street Campus High School to Host Wrestling

The Big Apple Games has added wrestling to its vast sports and activity programming for all New York City middle and high school athletes throughout the five boroughs beginning Monday, July 16.

Several years ago wrestling was discontinued due to low numbers but with the growth of the Beat the Streets Wrestling program expanding the base of wrestling in New York City they have added wrestling for the 2007 Summer Program.  Hopefully, next summer it will be added with more sites in every borough.

The program is scheduled to begin Monday, July 16 at 6pm-9pm.  The program will continue until August 16 and will be held every Monday through Thursday.

In conjunction with the Beat the Streets Program and its Partnership with the DOE/PSAL and the Fund for Education,  wrestling is being expanded in all 5 boroughs.  Five new High School Programs began in 2006-2007 season.  Next school season, 15 new high school programs will be added in the PSAL Developmental Program.

The effort is being spearhead by a full time PSAL Wrestling Commissioner Larry Cantor. He recruited 15 new high schools,  who have demonstrated through other successful PSAL Sports,  to be successful athletic programs and will add wrestling at their schools.  The following year, the BTS/PSAL  will be adding 15 new teams while the middle school programs continues to expand as well.  Since 2005,  there are 43 middle school programs with 20 more teams slated for the upcoming season.

According to Al Bevilacqua, President of the Beat the Streets Wrestling Inc, "The Big Apple Games is coming at a great time for our program as we will have 200 kids returning from summer wrestling camps who will now have an opportunity to drill and practice their newly acquired skills and techniques".

John Zarcone, Head Coach at the Grand Street Campus HS will be in charge of the program.  John has done a great job coming from a developmental program to winning the New York City PSAL Championship in 2007 in just 5 years.
