Tyler Mumbulo (JR / Bainbridge, NY) has been named the Northern Sun
Intercollegiate Conference's (NSIC) Wrestler of the Week. This honor
is the thirteenth NSIC Player of the Week award earned by an Upper
Iowa student-athlete this year and third by a Peacock wrestler for
the 2007-08 season. The junior was a 2007 All American, a two-time
National Qualifier, and a two-time Regional Finalist and received
the NSIC Wrestler of the Week award once last season.
Mumbulo (#6 NCAA) won the championship at 125 pounds. The junior
went 5-0 en route to the title. Mumbulo picked up victories by fall
in his first three matches over Andre Taylor (Dubuque/ 1:16), who
was 20-4 entering the match, Matt Chutz (William Penn/ 3:04), and
Kevin Gray (Dana/ 0:14), who was a NAIA National Qualifier last
year. Mumbulo defeated Robert Nahlik (Truman State) in the semis by
decision 6-3 and won the title by major decision, 10-1, over Mike
Mille (Buena Vista). The four bonus point victories were impressive
in a 125-pound bracket that featured #5 wrestler in Division 3, the
#6 and #8 wrestlers in NAIA, and two additional former NAIA National
Qualifiers.
“Tyler was very offensive-minded. He was able to put his opponents
in some vulnerable positions and he did a great job finishing them
off when they were in trouble. Getting a pin is not an easy thing to
do, but Tyler did a great job of it this weekend,” said Head Coach
Heath Grimm.
Mumbulo and the #6 Peacock wrestling team will travel to the Jim Fox
Open in Dubuque, Iowa on Saturday, Dec. 8. The tournament will begin
at 9:30 a.m. and go all day.
