All-Star Classic Results


BUFFALO, NY -- The 1998 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic, presented by American Airlines, hosted by the University at Buffalo produced three upsets out of the 10 contested bouts. A crowd of 3,253 fans watched as a total of 15 returning All-Americans competed in the 32nd Annual 'Classic held in UB's Alumni Arena.

In the first bout of the evening at 118 pounds, #3 Teague Moore (Oklahoma State) avenged an early-season loss to #2 Stephen Abas (Fresno State) at the Las Vegas Invitational with a close 9-8 decision. After giving up a takedown and two back points early on, Moore rallied to score six unanswered points to give Abas his first loss of the season. The second match at 126 pounds saw #3 Eric Jetton (Wisconsin) upset #2 Dwight Hinson (Iowa State) 6-1. With Hinson trailing 2-1 entering the third period, Jetton was awarded a penalty point for a Hinson's second stalling call and scored a late takedown to take the win. Finally, #4 Brandon Slay (Pennsylvania) scored a third-period takedown on #3 Jeff Catrabone (Michigan) to win a 3-1 decision at 167 pounds. A closely contested contest throughout, Slay was awarded by the referee with :02 seconds left in regulation for the upset.
