CORNELL GOES 3-0 AT BLACK AND DECKER DUALS ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell wrestling team won all three of its matches, including a dramatic come-from-behind 17-16 win over Pitt-Johnstown, to take first place at the Black & Decker/Cornell Duals on Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena.
Cornell trailed 13-0 to Pitt-Johnstown after four bouts, but rallied to win five of the last six to take the win. Junior Leo Urbinelli (Ontario, N.Y.) and senior Ottie Pendleton (Atlanta, Ga.) took major decisions at 157 and 184 pounds respectively to help provide the narrow margin of victory. The Big Red also defeated Lock Haven, 25-9, and captured a 22-11 win over Edinboro, in a match that was much closer than the final score indicates. Sophomore Sean Doyle (Wheeling, W. Va.) and senior Shawn Bradley (Athens, Pa.) won overtime matches at 133 and 149 pounds, and junior Joe Tucceri (Euclid, Ohio) won a 3-1 bout with a takedown in the final five seconds of regulation. Senior Bob Greenleaf (Kirkwood, Pa.) won all three of his matches at 197 pounds to improve to 6-0 on the season, including an individual championship at the Ivy League Kick-Off Classic last weekend.
Edinboro and Brown each finished 2-1 at the Black & Decker Duals. Edinboro's Rafael Vega was 3-0 with two major decisions, while Brown's Nate Burroughs had a 3-0 mark, which included one pin and one major decision. The Bears captured a 21-16 win over Pitt-Johnstown in the final match of the day when heavyweight Bronson Lingamfelter earned a point for an escape in the final five seconds of regulation to force overtime, and then captured the victory with a takedown in the extra session.
Other top performers at the Duals included Pitt Johnstown brothers Jody and John Strittmater, who each went 3-0 at 125 and 133 pounds respectively. The Mountain Cats' Isaac Greeley also went a perfect 3-0 at 149 pounds. Drexel's Damien Craighton won all three of his bouts at 197 pounds, while Lock Haven's Scott Bair was 3-0 with a pin at 141 pounds.
