WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Back-to-back technical falls by Matt
Picarsic and All-American Dustin DeNunzio helped 18th-ranked Harvard
overcome a late deficit and defeat Army 23-13 at Christl Arena on Friday
night.
Army led 13-10 after seven bouts, but Picarsic routed Scott
Siegfried 18-2 at 133 pounds and ninth-ranked DeNunzio's 141-pound match
with Charles Russ was stopped 30 seconds into the third period when
DeNunzio escaped to take an 18-3 lead. The two technical falls gave the
Crimson an insurmountable 20-13 lead with one bout left, and 149-pounder
Joel Friedman turned back Army's Jeremy Singleton 6-1 to secure the
23-13 final.
Trailing 3-0 after the opening 157-pound match, Army rallied for
seven straight points behind Troy Yegge's 10-5 win over Tom Kiler at 165
and Maurice Worthy's 19-8 major decision over Luke Goble at 174. Worthy,
ranked fourth nationally by InterMat, improved to 13-0 on the season.
Harvard drew even at 184 pounds, when Francis Volpe outscored
Joe Letko 8-0 in the third period and scored a 15-3 major decision. At
197, Harvard's Brad Soltis snapped a 6-6 tie in the third period with an
escape and a takedown and eventually won 10-6 to give the Crimson a 10-7
lead.
But the Cadets surged back ahead with consecutive one-point wins
from their heavyweight and their lightweight. In a hard-fought
heavyweight bout between a pair of freshmen, Army's Eric Gust built and
early 3-0 lead but had to hold on for a 4-3 victory.
At 125 pounds, Army freshman Matt Magennis picked up a
first-period takedown, but Harvard's Brandon Rhoades countered with a
reversal early in the second period. The final stanza featured no
scoring, but Magennis maintained his early riding advantage and was
awarded a 3-2 victory -- his fifth straight dual meet win.
The win by Magennis gave the Cadets a 13-10 lead, but that was
quickly erased by Picarsic and DeNunzio, and Harvard improved to 4-2 on
the season.
The Cadets, now 4-3, host Boston University, Drexel and
Carson-Newman in a quadrangular meet on Saturday afternoon beginning at
2 p.m. in Christl Arena.
